Mercoledì 21 Maggio 2025, dalle 18:30 alle 21:00, L’Ascensore è lieto di inaugurare Cave and Rocks of Sicily, la prima mostra personale in Italia di Sophie-Therese Trenka-Dalton, a cura di Mario Margani. Venerdì 23 maggio, dalle 18:30 alle 20:30, è prevista una visita guidata con l’artista.
L’esposizione rappresenta l’esito di una ricerca condotta da Trenka-Dalton nell’arco di oltre tre anni, sviluppata attraverso soggiorni periodici in Sicilia in qualità di artista in residenza presso il Garage Arts Platform di Enna, e che, nella forma espositiva presentata presso L’Ascensore, si articola in una serie di fotografie, sculture e campioni di rocce siciliane, esplorando le connessioni tra la stratificata storia culturale dell’isola e la complessità della sua ricca conformazione geologica.
Caves and Rocks of Sicily segna una svolta nella ricerca artistica di Trenka-Dalton, che per la prima volta approfondisce, con questo progetto, il rapporto tra essere umano, sfera culturale e ambiente naturale, attraverso lavori realizzati in pietra nati da un dialogo costante con il mondo empirico della geologia e della speleologia. Le diverse serie di opere in mostra costruiscono, nel loro insieme, un discorso sulla dicotomia tra erosione ed estrazione: si muovono dunque tra i fenomeni naturali di disgregazione delle masse rocciose e l’asportazione di pietre e minerali, tanto per fini industriali legati alla materia prima quanto per scopi turistici o collezionistici. Cosa raccontano oggi i sedimenti di grotte arcaiche abitate migliaia di anni fa? Cosa diventa percepibile nella tensione tra i lunghi tempi dei processi geologici e la caducità della civiltà umana? Come è possibile, attraverso il linguaggio dell’arte, trasmettere la carica mitica di un paesaggio? In particolare, le fotografie in grotta di Trenka-Dalton, scattate durante le visite a diverse cavità disseminate sull’isola, generano un immaginario distante e radicalmente altro rispetto alla documentazione scientifica: il fulcro delle sue serie fotografiche risiede nel tentativo di tradurre artisticamente lo sconvolgimento percettivo dello spazio e del tempo, fenomeno che si sperimenta all’interno delle grotte, là dove l’essere umano, per un tempo prolungato, è sottoposto alla privazione della luce diurna.
Biografia
Sophie-Therese Trenka-Dalton è un'artista visiva con base a Berlino. La sua pratica si radica in una ricerca artistica focalizzata sulla storia culturale e sulla sua percezione nel contemporaneo. Sviluppa progetti a lungo termine che prendono spesso la forma di installazioni architettoniche, nate dalla combinazione di scultura, fotografia, video, artefatti e ricerca materiale. Ha studiato Belle Arti alla University of the Arts di Berlino e alla Cooper Union di New York.
I suoi progetti sono stati esposti a livello internazionale in numerose istituzioni e spazi espositivi, tra cui: Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlino; Kochi Biennale Foundation, Kochi, India; Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Berlino; Serpentine Gallery, Londra; Fondation d’Entreprise Ricard, Parigi; Harris Lieberman Gallery, New York; KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlino; Cinema Akil, Dubai; HeidelbergerKunstverein, Heidelberg; after the butcher, Berlino.
Ha inoltre tenuto presentazioni e lezioni presso la University of the Arts di Berlino; 1Shanti Road, Bangalore; Gulf Research Meeting, University of Cambridge, UK; nGbK, Berlino; Sharjah Art Foundation e l’American University of Sharjah.
Nel 2021 ha prodotto e curato la serie video The Sky was the Limit – Art and Astronomy at the Archenhold Observatory in collaborazione con la Stiftung Planetarium Berlin.
Nel corso degli anni ha ricevuto il sostegno del BerlinSenate Department for Culture, della StiftungKunstfonds Bonn, del DAAD e dei Goethe-Institut della regione del Golfo e di Bangalore per la realizzazione dei suoi progetti.

Wednesday, May 21st, 2025, from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM, L’Ascensore is pleased to inaugurate Cave and Rocks of Sicily, the first solo exhibition in Italy by Sophie-Therese Trenka-Dalton, curated by Mario Margani. Friday, May 23rd, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, a guided tour with the artist is scheduled.
The exhibition represents the outcome of a research project carried out by Trenka-Dalton over the course of more than three years. Developed through periodic stays in Sicily as an artist-in-residence at the Garage Arts Platform in Enna, the project takes form at L’Ascensore through a series of photographs, sculptures, and samples of Sicilian rocks, exploring the connections between the island’s layered cultural history and the complexity of its rich geological formations.
Caves and Rocks of Sicily marks a turning point in Trenka-Dalton’s artistic practice. For the first time, this project delves into the relationship between the human being, the cultural sphere, and the natural environment, through works in stone that emerged from an ongoing dialogue with the empirical worlds of geology and speleology. The various series of works on display collectively construct a discourse on the dichotomy between erosion and extraction: they navigate between natural processes of rock disintegration and the removal of stones and minerals, whether for industrial purposes related to raw materials or for tourism and collecting. What do the sediments of ancient caves, inhabited thousands of years ago, tell us today? What becomes perceptible in the tension between the vast timescale of geological processes and the transience of human civilization? How can the mythic charge of a landscape be conveyed through the language of art? In particular, Trenka-Dalton’s cave photographs – taken during visits to various cavities scattered across the island – generate an imaginary that is distant from, and radically other than, scientific documentation. The core of her photographic series lies in the attempt to artistically translate the perceptual disorientation of space and time – an experience unique to caves, where the human being, over an extended duration, is subjected to the absence of daylight.
Biography
Sophie-Therese Trenka-Dalton is a visual artist based in Berlin. Her practice is rooted in artistic research focused on cultural history and its perception in the contemporary world. She develops long-term projects that often take the form of architectural installations, resulting from a combination of sculpture, photography, video, artifacts, and material research. She studied Fine Arts at the University of the Arts in Berlin and at Cooper Union in New York.
Her projects have been exhibited internationally in numerous institutions and art spaces, including: Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin; Kochi Biennale Foundation, Kochi, India; Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Berlin; Serpentine Gallery, London; Fondationd’Entreprise Ricard, Paris; Harris Lieberman Gallery, New York; KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; Cinema Akil, Dubai; Heidelberger Kunstverein, Heidelberg; after the butcher, Berlin.
